

But Anne never lost her love of the written word. When the family crossed the Atlantic to start a new life in America, Anne was kept busy tending to the sick in their colony, carrying out the duties of a faithful Christian woman, and eventually raising her eight children. He also taught her an appreciation for poetry, which led to Anne writing beautiful, deep poems of her own. Unlike most Puritan women at the time, Anne was encouraged by her father to think for herself and to read books other than just the Bible. Despite the upheavals in her life and the many barriers that held back women from excelling outside of the home, Anne became a distinguished poet – the first to be published in America.


Poet, Pilgrim, Rebel is the true story of Anne Bradstreet (née Dudley), a Puritan woman from 17th century England who emigrated to The New World with her family in order to escape religious persecution.
